Medicare Enrollment

If you will soon be eligible for Medicare, you may be wondering how to enroll in coverage. You don’t have to enroll immediately, but doing so is usually the best way to avoid late enrollment penalties. To find out how to enroll in Medicare, continue reading.

Who is Eligible for Medicare?

You can sign up for Medicare once you turn 65 or after you’ve collected Social Security Disability benefits for at least 24 months. People with End-Stage Renal Disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis can qualify earlier. Once you are eligible, you need to apply for Medicare before you can receive benefits.

Applying for Medicare

In some cases, it isn’t necessary to sign up for Medicare because some people get Medicare Part A and Part B automatically. If you are already collecting Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled into Part A and Part B. 

If you aren’t collecting Social Security, you won’t be automatically enrolled into Medicare. You’ll need to sign up through the Social Security Administration.
